What is Reflexology

Reflexology is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that encourages the body to relax, rebalance, and heal itself. By working specific reflex points on the feet, hands, and face, reflexology supports holistic wellbeing—benefiting the body physically, emotionally, and mentally.

A reflexology session involves applying precise pressure, typically using the fingers or thumbs on reflex points that correspond to specific organs and systems throughout the body. Stimulating these areas helps restore balance by increasing energy flow and encouraging the body’s natural healing response.

The Benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology works by enhancing circulation, which is vital for overall health. When circulation becomes sluggish—due to inactivity, injury, or other factors—blood flow to the feet can become restricted. This may lead to a buildup of waste matter, forming small crystalline deposits that can feel rough or gritty under the skin.

During a reflexology treatment, these deposits are gently targeted and broken down, helping the body to expel them and restore healthy circulation. This process supports detoxification and encourages the body’s natural healing response.

Who can have Reflexology

Reflexology is suitable for almost everyone, from three months into pregnancy through to later life. At every stage, our bodies and minds can benefit from the gentle support this therapy offers.

Clients come for reflexology during pregnancy, after birth, and throughout early childhood. It can be a calming presence during the teenage years, when hormones and social pressures may feel overwhelming. It is also a supportive tool during exam periods, whether at school, college, university, or while training in a new role.

As we move through parenthood, menopause or andropause, and into the autumn years of life, reflexology continues to offer a space for rest, rebalancing, and relaxation. Whether you're navigating change, seeking calm, or simply looking after yourself, reflexology can be a supportive part of your health.

Types of Reflexology

Reflexology is a gentle, holistic therapy that works on specific points of the feet, hands, or face to support the body’s natural ability to rebalance and restore itself. Many clients report feeling deeply relaxed after a session, along with a range of other positive effects.

While everyone responds differently, reflexology may support:
  • A greater sense of wellbeing
  • Improved sleep quality
  • Enhanced relaxation and stress relief
  • A feeling of lightness or ease in the body
  • Emotional release or clarity
  • A sense of grounding and calm
Reflexology also encourages deep relaxation and supports better sleep, two key factors in helping the body function at its best. When we’re more relaxed, the nervous system can settle, which may ease tension and discomfort. Improved sleep and relaxation also support emotional wellbeing and help us cope more effectively with everyday stress. When we feel rested and calm, we are often better equipped to manage whatever life brings.

Facial Reflexology focuses on reflex (pressure) points across the face that stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanisms. This gentle therapy helps improve circulation and nerve conduction, encouraging the release of toxins via the lymphatic system and promoting overall wellbeing.

By working the reflex points on the face and massaging the neck area, we can support and harmonise the entire body. The face reflects the health of internal organs, the central nervous system, and neuro-biological pathways. Its close proximity to the brain and cranial nerves makes facial reflexology especially powerful in influencing body systems.

Much like a traditional facial, this treatment offers a soothing experience that leaves the skin glowing and the mind calm. But facial reflexology goes further, it works holistically to support internal balance, emotional wellbeing, and the body’s natural healing responses. It’s a gentle way to care for both your outer and inner self.

I am trained in the award-winning Bergman Method, which is currently used to support a wide range of common conditions. Facial reflexology is more than a treatment, it is a deeply restorative experience that invites the body to rebalance, reconnect, and heal.

Hand reflexology offers a soothing alternative for anyone who feels uncomfortable with foot treatments or has mobility or sensitivity issues. Because the hands are so easy to access, the practice can be incorporated into a session without requiring the client to undress or reposition themselves, creating an immediate sense of ease. The gentle pressure techniques used in hand reflexology can help encourage relaxation, support circulation, and ease tension throughout the body, all while keeping the experience grounded and comforting. Many people find that working with the hands feels more personal and less intrusive, allowing them to settle into a state of calm more quickly.

Another beautiful aspect of hand reflexology is its versatility, it can be practiced virtually anywhere. During a break at work, while resting at home, or even outdoors in a peaceful setting. This makes it an excellent tool for ongoing wellbeing, as it empowers individuals to carry some of the benefits of reflexology with them into daily life. Whether done by a practitioner or used as a simple self-care ritual, hand reflexology offers a gentle, nurturing way to support balance in both body and mind.

Working on the feet has a uniquely grounding quality, offering a sense of stability that many people find deeply comforting. Because the feet are rich in nerve endings and reflex points, even gentle work can create a profound feeling of release. As tension softens and the body responds, clients often notice a natural settling, almost as if they’re reconnecting with the earth beneath them. This grounding effect can help quiet a busy mind, ease physical strain, and invite a deeper awareness of the body’s innate rhythms.

Many clients describe foot reflexology as a way of restoring balance from the inside out. Treatments can encourage smoother energy flow throughout the body, helping to clear areas of stagnation and bring a renewed sense of vitality. Emotionally, the experience can be just as powerful; the grounding nature of the work often leaves people feeling more centred, calmer, and better able to cope with the demands of daily life. For those seeking a restorative practice that supports both physical ease and emotional equilibrium, foot reflexology can offer a deeply nourishing path toward wellbeing.

Please note: Reflexology does not claim to diagnose or treat medical conditions. However, many clients choose it to support their overall wellbeing. If you’re experiencing specific symptoms or concerns, I’m happy to talk through how reflexology might support your general wellbeing alongside any medical care you are receiving.
